Comment on ~Say Bonjour to your Mac Printers in Windows by Ron

Having trouble finding troubleshooting info for Bonjour and Windows 7 Home Pro.

I have an HP Deskjet 932C running via USB to an old Mac G4 Quicksilver running OS X 10.4.11. The printer has been working fine and has been shared with a G4 ibook wirelessly via an ethernet connected Westell Model 327W Router which I use for our DSL internet sharing.

I recently purchased a Gateway NV Series laptop with Core i5 running Windows 7 Home Pro for my wife and kids. They would like to share the printer also via wireless connection. I saw online that Bonjour was the way to go. I first downloaded and set up Bonjour Printer Services 2.0.2. It sees the printer and appears to successfully load, including placing an alias on the desktop. I can set the printer as the default and appear to print to it, but the file disappears and never goes to the queue.

I uninstalled and reinstalled several times and ended up with three different versions of the printer available to print to in the menu. But none worked. I uninstalled all and deleted queues.

I then read about the full version of Bonjour and downloaded the Bonjour64Setup Installer. I ran the Setup. It again saw the printer and appeared to set it up as the default for me, but still will not print.

Windows and printers are excepted in the firewall settings on the host Mac and Bonjour is permitted in the Firewall settings on the PC.

Don't know what else to try. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Comment on ~Playing the Waiting Game by Mr. B

If I may just share my OF workaround for Waiting For.

First of all, I share the view that creating a "Waiting For" context COULD create havoc where Context, as classically defined by GTD'ers, might prove a factor in reviewing your Waiting For list. For instance, part of my Weekly Review is shooting follow-up emails to those I was waiting an email response from (hence, my @Email context). Apparently I don't want to play the waiting game where the playground is inappropriate (can't resist the pun, sorry), like when I'm offline. So here's what I've done:

Say I emailed a quote to Client A and will be waiting for their reply, I'd tick off "Email quote to Client A" and then add another entry that says something like "WF: reply from Client A re: quote" with the context @Email, of course. Now say I created hundreds of entries of that sort (with the "WF:" prefix), what did was type "WF:" on OF's search box and Boom! all those prefixed entries will be displayed. Then I'll save the window as a new perspective and call it, um, "Waiting For."

There you have it: one window view of all your Waiting For tasks with their different contexts intact.

Hope that helps in any way. Heck, hope I'm doing it right! =)

Best,

Mr. B

For any GroupWise admins who might be lurking as well, Novell also has a <a href="http://www.novell.com/promo/data_synchronizer.html" rel="nofollow">Technology Preview</a> of their upcoming Mobility Pack, which is an ActiveSync server for GroupWise. This allows GroupWise to do over-the-air synchronization of email, contacts and calendars through the "Exchange Account" settings on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. It looks very promising as well, and will not only sychronize iPhones, but just about any phone/device that has ActiveSync capabilities!

@Danita - thanks for your update on the book. Based on your comments I went ahead and purchased a copy and look forward to reading about other solutions. Who knows, perhaps it will help me convince our IT management to provide an enterprise solution at some point in the future. Thanks again, and thanks for reading, John.

Hi John! Thanks for getting the word out on the Ghost Pattern Software GW offerings. Outside of "enterprise" tools, these are my favorite GW apps for my iPhone/iPad (and I knew the developer back when he worked for the GroupWise team at Novell - sometimes it's just good to support really nice people!).

I am the author of the book that DJ mentions. And while you are correct that the guide includes many options that require administrative support, there are a few that don't. For example, you can use Outlook to sync at the desktop (painful but free if you already own Outlook), MobileMe (http://www.apple.com/mobileme/) to sync over the air (not free, but still somewhat painful) or CompanionLink (http://bit.ly/aTqIYO ) to also sync OTA. So GroupWise users should not despair! There are a number of options depending on your patience level and pocketbook!

@DJ - Thanks for your comment and book recommendation. I took a quick look using your link and this does look like it contains thorough coverage of the various options available, albeit many are for the enterprise. I believe over time, most organizations will be forced to come up with a solution for their iPhone users in order to improve security while maintaining the efficiency of the workforce. Thanks again for reading, John
